Chapter 17 - Prison and Reckoning|
Six months after the infamous company party, Julian Vance stood before a federal judge in a packed courtroom to receive his sentence.
He wore a dark blue prison uniform, his hands cuffed at his waist. He looked smaller, drained of the grandiosity that had once defined him.
“Mr. Vance,” the judge spoke, her voice echoing off the high stone walls. “You were given a position of immense trust at Aurelia Systems. You drew a handsome salary. Yet, driven by vanity and greed, you systematically looted your employer and betrayed your family.”
Julian kept his head bowed, staring at the polished wood of the defense table.
“The court sentences you to six years in a federal penitentiary,” the judge declared, striking her gavel down hard. “Full restitution of two point three million dollars will be paid from your frozen assets.”
As the bailiffs led Julian away in chains, he turned his head and caught sight of Audrey sitting in the front row of the gallery.
She didn't look triumphant. She didn't look angry. She simply looked at him with complete neutrality—as if he were a stranger she had once known a long time ago.
Two weeks later, the annual gala for the Boston Arts Foundation took place.
Audrey took the stage, wearing an elegant dark velvet gown. Behind her, a large screen displayed a photo of her mother’s diamond earrings.
“Tonight,” Audrey announced to the crowd of philanthropists, “I am donating these heirloom diamonds to our main auction. All proceeds will go toward founding the Vance Memorial Scholarship for young women pursuing degrees in business and corporate law.”

The bidding started at fifty thousand dollars. Within ten minutes, a collector raised his paddle at ninety-six thousand dollars.
Audrey watched the gavel fall with a deep sense of peace. The diamonds that had caused so much pain would now fund the freedom and education of dozens of women.
