Chapter 7 - The Empire Shakes

Nathaniel’s mouth curved into a terrifying, predatory smile, though his eyes remained pitch black.
"His primary underwriter is Eastbridge & Co.," Nathaniel explained, tapping the file. "Their CEO currently owes me two massive favors, and he fears me for three very specific, highly illegal reasons."
"Freeze the review," I ordered, the old corporate instincts I had buried for six years suddenly roaring back to life. "Tip off the SEC anonymously. Flag his collateral for systemic fraud. Then, I want you to short his stock aggressively through our offshore shell funds."
Nathaniel watched me for a long, heavy moment. He leaned back in his chair, a look of profound relief washing over his tired face.
"There she is," he murmured softly. "There's my little sister."
I gently reached out and touched Maisie’s sleeping hair.
"No," I corrected him, staring into the dark window. "That woman was always here, Nathaniel. She just finally stopped begging to be loved."
By 9:00 AM the next morning, Grant Hawthorne’s carefully constructed kingdom began to violently shake.
At the very top of Hawthorne Capital’s towering glass headquarters in Boston’s Financial District, Grant smashed a fragile porcelain coffee cup against his mahogany desk, shattering it to dust. His Chief Financial Officer stood across from him, sweating profusely through his expensive silk collar.
"What the hell do you mean Eastbridge halted the roadshow?!" Grant roared, his face purple with rage.
"They... they received a detailed, anonymous whistleblower report overnight," the CFO stammered, wiping his brow. "It alleges wildly inflated assets, hidden offshore liabilities, and fraudulent collateral filings. The SEC has already opened a preliminary inquiry. They called at 8:00 AM."
Grant went completely still. "Our books are clean. Tell them it's a mistake."
The CFO did not answer fast enough.
Grant’s face darkened, panic finally bleeding through his arrogance. "Call the banks. Now."
"We did, sir," the man swallowed audibly. "Three major lenders declined our scheduled extensions. Two just completely froze our new credit lines. And Atlantic Trust... they just demanded $50 million in additional collateral by Friday, or they foreclose."
"That’s impossible!" Grant shouted.
"Also, sir… there was incredibly heavy short activity at market open. Hawthorne Capital’s private debt instruments are being aggressively dumped through secondary channels. The lenders are panicking. Someone with deep pockets is trying to bleed us out."
Grant stared at him as if the man had suddenly begun speaking in tongues.
For years, Grant had moved through elite Boston society like a man carved from untouchable marble. He truly believed the world made room for him because he was a self-made genius. He had never once understood that some of the biggest doors had only opened because a quiet, unassuming woman sitting at his dinner table had secretly whispered his name into the right billionaires' ears.

Now, every single one of those doors was violently slamming shut.
