Chapter 12 - A Humbling in Manhattan

|
He drove like a madman to Chase Private Wealth in Manhattan, after one of his panicked private investigators discovered an old, supposedly closed account under my married name.
When he finally burst through the doors, looking deranged, he found me calmly exiting the bulletproof glass conference room. I was surrounded by senior bankers, high-powered corporate attorneys, and elite wealth managers who treated me with the kind of absolute, terrified respect Grant had spent his entire pathetic life desperately chasing.
"Miss Whitaker," the silver-haired bank president was saying, bowing his head slightly. "Your $4.8 billion liquidity transfer has officially cleared. As instructed, the first massive tranche will move today to complete the hostile acquisition of Hawthorne Capital’s distressed debt."
Grant stood near the security desk, currently being restrained by two massive armed guards after he tried to force his way past the metal detectors.
His face looked like it was carved from sheer shock.
"Evelyn," he rasped, his voice cracking.
I glanced at the security team and gave a tiny flick of my wrist. "Let him go."
They released his arms. He stumbled awkwardly toward me, his custom suit severely wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his trademark arrogance completely stripped down to raw, pathetic panic.
"You’re... you're behind this," he whispered, staring at me like I was a ghost. "The short selling. The frozen accounts."
"Yes," I answered clearly.
He flinched as if I had physically struck him.
"I saw the video," he blurted out, the words tumbling over each other. "Brooke cut the dress! She lied to me, Evelyn. I know now. I was completely wrong. I’ll fix it. I’ll fire her. I’ll bring you and Maisie home. We can go to counseling, we can—"
"Stop."
He stopped instantly. The wealthy bankers behind me went completely silent, watching the execution.
I stepped closer to him, close enough to see the broken, red veins in his bloodshot eyes.
"Do you honestly think this is about a torn dress, Grant?"
His mouth opened, but no words came out.
"You tied your wife to a wall and whipped her in a cellar," I said, my voice low and lethal. "You called your own bleeding daughter an animal. You denied medical care to a five-year-old child because another woman cried prettily enough. You broke the only family that ever truly loved you."
His face completely crumpled. Tears spilled over his eyelashes. "Evelyn, please—"
"Go home, Grant. Go home, and watch what happens next."
He reached out, desperately trying to grab my cashmere sleeve.
I stepped back gracefully before his filthy fingers could even graze the fabric.

"If you ever try to put your hand on me again," I promised, "you will lose it."
I turned my back on him and walked to my waiting black car while he stood frozen on the sidewalk, openly sobbing in front of half the financial district.
