Chapter 4 - The Real Signature

|
Dawn broke gray and freezing over the Newport cliffs.
When the heavy cellar door finally unlocked, I expected Grant to walk down the stairs to gloat. Instead, his head butler, Thomas, stepped carefully into the dim light. He was carrying a polished silver tray. Resting on it was a Montblanc fountain pen and a terrifyingly thick legal document.
Thomas’s face wore that specific brand of polite, practiced disgust that wealthy servants reserve exclusively for the disgraced wives of powerful men.
"Mr. Hawthorne says that if you refuse to crawl upstairs and apologize to Miss Ellison, you are to sign this immediately," Thomas said, not meeting my eyes.
I shifted Maisie carefully in my lap. Her small body was radiating heat. The fever had set in, and the makeshift bandage on her forehead was crusted dark brown at the center.
"What exactly does the document say?" I asked, my voice dry.
The butler cleared his throat, adjusting his posture. "It stipulates that you admit full marital misconduct. You agree to leave this property with no claim to the estate, no spousal support, and absolutely no custody of the child."
I laughed.
It wasn't a joyful sound. It echoed against the wet stone walls like safety glass cracking under extreme pressure. Grant truly believed I would beg. He thought threatening me with poverty would break my spirit. After half a decade, he still thought I was just the quiet, orphaned charity case with no family, no trust fund, and no identity outside of being Mrs. Hawthorne.
"Give me the pen," I commanded.
Thomas blinked, taken aback by my tone. "Ma’am?"
"I said, give me the pen."
He handed it over tentatively.
Without hesitating, I flipped to the final page. I drew a thick, aggressive line straight through the custody clause. Next to it, I wrote in a steady, unbroken hand: Maisie Hawthorne leaves with her mother, effective immediately.
Then, I signed on the dotted line. I didn't sign 'Evelyn Hawthorne'. I signed my real name. The name that commanded private armies and global markets.
Evelyn Rose Whitaker.
The butler’s eyes dropped to the signature. The blood instantly drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. He knew that name. Everyone in the 1% knew that name.
Before Thomas could utter a word of panic, heavy footsteps thundered down the wooden stairs. Grant appeared in the doorway, jaw clenched tight, tie perfectly knotted, fury burning through the dark circles under his eyes. Brooke hovered right behind him like a pale, parasitic ghost wrapped in cashmere.

"What sick game is this, Evelyn?" Grant snapped, glaring at the altered papers.
"No game," I said, standing up and lifting my feverish daughter into my arms. "I’m leaving."
