Chapter 9 - The Maid's Courage

|

Wesley reached into his pocket and pulled out a keycard, placing it in Ruth’s hand.

“From tonight on, you are no longer a maid in this house,” Wesley said firmly. “You are Norah’s personal caretaker and head of the domestic staff. Your salary will be quadrupled, and you will answer only to me.”

Ruth looked at the keycard, then up at Wesley in shock. “Mr. Cain, that’s... that’s too much. I don't need a promotion. I just care about Norah.”

“I know you do,” Wesley said, his voice softening slightly. “That’s precisely why you’re the only person in this city I trust to keep her safe.”

Norah vigorously nodded her head from the bed, grabbing Ruth’s hand and squeezing it tightly.

Ruth looked between the brother and sister, seeing the deep, unbreakable bond they shared—a bond that had almost been severed by greed and hatred tonight.

“Alright,” Ruth agreed quietly. “I’ll stay.”

Wesley gave a single, firm nod. Then his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his face immediately hardening back into the icy mask of the Mafia Don.

“Marco found Briggs,” Wesley said, looking at the screen. “He was trying to board a cargo boat bound for Canada.”

He looked back at Ruth. “I have to go to the harbor to settle this once and for all. I am leaving eight armed men inside the house. No one enters without your permission. Do you understand?”

“I understand,” Ruth said, stepping back into her role with absolute composure. “Go take care of your business, Mr. Cain. Norah will be safe here with me.”

Wesley looked at her for a second longer, a spark of something unspoken passing between them, before he turned and strode out of the mansion.
