Downstairs, Wesley fired three rapid shots from behind the sideboard, taking down the lead mercenary.
The remaining two mercenaries split up, one keeping Wesley pinned with suppression fire while the other sprinted toward the back stairs leading straight to the bedrooms.
“Marco!” Wesley roared into his earpiece, but got only static in response. The attackers had brought a signal jammer.
Wesley broke cover, ignoring the sharp pain in his shoulder as he fired at the second mercenary, but the man had already disappeared up the service stairwell.
They weren't here for Wesley. They were here to finish what Celeste started—to eliminate Norah and destroy the thumb drive containing the syndicate's master secrets.
Upstairs, Ruth heard heavy, metallic footsteps approaching the service door near Norah’s room.
She looked around the room frantically. There were no weapons, no security buttons that worked with the power jammed.
She looked at the medical cabinet.
Ruth sprinted over, grabbing a large syringe and filling it rapidly with a concentrated dose of potassium chloride from the emergency kit—a lethal dose if injected directly into a bloodstream.
The brass bolt on the door groaned as a heavy boot slammed against it from the outside.
Norah cowered beneath the desk, clutching her chest, her eyes filled with absolute terror.

“It’s going to be okay,” Ruth whispered, hiding the heavy syringe inside her sleeve as she stood beside the door, her whole body shaking. “I won't let them touch you.”
The door splintered inward, crashing off its hinges.
