Chapter 8 - Silk and Shadows

|

Saturday evening arrived with a suffocating mix of anxiety and adrenaline.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror in my bedroom, staring at the woman looking back at me. The dress Victor had arranged was a masterpiece. It was a floor-length gown of deep, blood-red silk. It clung to my curves perfectly, featuring a high, elegant neckline that belied the daring, plunging back that dipped dangerously low.

Paired with the diamond teardrop earrings left in a velvet box on my bed, I didn't look like a nanny who spent her days cleaning up spilled juice. I looked like a queen stepping onto a battlefield.

A soft knock echoed on my door.

"Harper? The car is ready," Victor's deep voice called out.

I took a deep breath, smoothing the silk skirt, and opened the door.

Victor stood in the hallway, wearing a flawless black tuxedo that made him look like a lethal, modern-day prince. The moment his eyes landed on me, he froze. The breath visibly left his lungs.

He stared at me for five long seconds, his gray eyes darkening with a profound, terrifying hunger that made my pulse race. The cinematic framing of the moment was undeniable—the dim hallway lighting casting half his face in shadow, highlighting the sharp angle of his jaw and the raw, unmasked desire in his expression.

"You look..." Victor started, his voice dropping into a hoarse whisper. He cleared his throat, struggling to regain his composure. "You look breathtaking."

"Thank you," I murmured, feeling a flush of heat rise to my cheeks. "You clean up nicely yourself, Mr. Rossi."

He offered his arm. "Shall we?"

I slipped my hand through the crook of his elbow, feeling the solid, corded muscle beneath his tuxedo jacket. The physical contact sent a jolt of electricity straight to my core.

The ride to the downtown hotel was silent, the tension in the back of the armored Maybach thick enough to choke on.

When we pulled up to the red carpet, the flashbulbs of the local press blinded us. Victor didn't let go of me. He placed his large, warm hand securely on the small of my bare back, guiding me through the chaos.

"Head high, Harper," Victor whispered near my ear, his breath sending a shiver down my spine. "Tonight, you own this city."

We stepped into the grand ballroom, and the true game began.
