Chapter 16 - The Trap is Set

|

"Stay exactly behind me," Victor ordered, checking the magazine of his assault rifle. "We are going to move through the main floor to the loading docks. My extraction team is waiting there."

I gripped the cold steel of the pistol, nodding firmly. "I'm ready."

We stepped out of the small office and into the cavernous main warehouse. It was a chaotic war zone. Small fires burned near the entrance where Victor had breached the building with explosives. The air was thick with smoke and the metallic smell of blood.

Suddenly, the floodlights in the ceiling snapped on, blindingly bright.

"Victor Rossi!" Lorenzo Falcone's voice echoed through a megaphone from a catwalk high above the warehouse floor. "You always were arrogant! You walked right into the kill box!"

Dozens of heavily armed Falcone mercenaries emerged from behind the shipping containers, completely surrounding us on the main floor. They had automatic weapons leveled directly at our chests.

We were hopelessly outnumbered.

Victor didn't flinch. He didn't raise his rifle. He stood perfectly still, his body shielding mine entirely.

"You think this is a trap for me, Lorenzo?" Victor called out, his voice echoing with terrifying, absolute calm.

Lorenzo laughed from the catwalk. "You have nowhere to run, Victor. Drop the weapon, and I might let the girl live long enough to watch you die."

"You misunderstood the situation, old man," Victor said smoothly. He slowly reached into his tactical vest and pulled out a small, black detonator.

Lorenzo's laughter died instantly.

"I didn't come here to fight your army, Lorenzo," Victor continued, his thumb resting casually over the red button. "I came here to retrieve my wife. My men spent the last twenty minutes wiring every single structural support beam in this warehouse with military-grade C4."

A wave of panic rippled through the mercenaries surrounding us. They looked at the concrete pillars, realizing they were standing in a massive, rigged explosive trap.

"You're bluffing!" Lorenzo shouted, his voice cracking with fear. "You'd kill yourselves!"

"I have survived worse," Victor smiled, a cold, empty expression that chilled the blood of every man in the room. "Tell your men to drop their weapons and clear the path to the exit. Or we all die together right now."
