Chapter 18 - The Syndicate War

|

The following weeks turned Chicago into a war zone.

Victor didn't wait for Lorenzo Falcone to regroup. The bluff at the warehouse had humiliated the older boss, making him appear weak to his own capos. Victor capitalized on that weakness immediately, launching a relentless, highly coordinated offensive against the Falcone territories.

The Rossi syndicate moved like ghosts, dismantling the rival family's operations piece by piece.

I remained locked securely inside the fortified estate, spending my days with Finn. The five-year-old boy was blissfully unaware of the bloodshed occurring in the city, but he sensed the shift in the house. He clung to me tighter, his small hands constantly seeking mine.

"Is Dad winning the bad men?" Finn asked one afternoon while we were coloring in the nursery.

I stopped my crayon mid-stroke, looking down at his innocent face.

"Your dad is very strong, Finn," I answered carefully. "He is making sure the bad men can never hurt us again."

Finn nodded seriously, returning to his drawing. "Good. Because I told him he has to protect you now. You're my Harper."

Tears pricked my eyes. I pulled him into a tight hug, inhaling the scent of his child's shampoo, silently vowing that I would never let the violence of this world touch him.

Late that night, Victor returned to the estate. He looked exhausted, his dark suit smelling of cigar smoke and cold rain. He found me sitting in the study, reading a book by the fire.

He didn't say a word. He walked over, dropped heavily onto the sofa beside me, and rested his head in my lap.

I gently ran my fingers through his dark hair, feeling the immense tension in his neck and shoulders.

"It's done," Victor murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "Lorenzo’s lieutenants turned on him to save their own territories. The Falcone family surrendered unconditionally tonight."

I stopped stroking his hair, my heart skipping a beat. "Lorenzo?"

"He's dead," Victor stated coldly. "His own men handled it. The war is over, Harper. The city is ours."

A profound, heavy silence settled over the room. The ghost of my parents' murder had finally been avenged, not by the law, but by the ruthless justice of the underworld.

I looked down at the man resting in my lap, realizing that the terrifying mafia boss the world feared was, in this quiet moment, entirely mine.
