Chapter 9 - The Aftermath

|
Three days after the dramatic courtroom revelation, Clara finally returned to her own house.
She walked through the front door, holding Violet’s hand. The house was quiet, empty, and completely devoid of Gabriel’s suffocating presence. The police had already finished their search, taking boxes of evidence from his home office.
Clara took a deep breath, the scent of vanilla and pine filling her lungs. It finally felt like her home again.
“Mama Clara?” Violet asked softly, looking around the grand foyer. “Is Daddy ever coming back here?”
“No, sweetie,” Clara promised, kneeling down to look the little girl in the eyes. “He is never coming back. It’s just going to be you, me, and the new baby. We’re going to be a real family now.”
Violet smiled, a genuine, bright expression that melted Clara’s heart. She threw her arms around Clara’s neck, hugging her tightly.
Over the next few weeks, Clara worked tirelessly with her attorney, Eleanor, to secure her future. With Gabriel locked in a county jail cell awaiting trial, the divorce proceedings moved forward with breathtaking speed.
Because of the attempted murder charges and the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, the judge granted Clara a highly favorable settlement. She retained full ownership of the house, absolute control over the joint investment portfolios, and ninety percent of Gabriel’s software company shares.
Gabriel was financially annihilated.
But Clara’s primary focus wasn't the money. It was Violet.
She filed an emergency petition for permanent legal adoption. Gabriel’s parents, who had always viewed Violet as a burden, eagerly signed away their rights, wanting nothing to do with the scandal their son had created.
Clara officially became Violet’s mother in the eyes of the law. It was the proudest moment of her life, surpassing any financial victory.
