Chapter 18 - The Final Decree

|

Two weeks after the criminal trial concluded, Clara sat back in Judge Holloway’s family courtroom for the finalization of the civil divorce and asset distribution.

Without Gabriel present to contest the terms, and with his criminal convictions officially on the record, the proceedings were swift and entirely one-sided.

“Mrs. Linwood,” Judge Holloway smiled warmly from the bench. “It is my absolute pleasure to grant your petition for a full and complete divorce.”

The judge signed the heavy stack of documents with a flourish.

“The court officially awards you exclusive ownership of the marital home, the vehicles, and one hundred percent of the remaining liquid assets in the joint investment portfolios,” the judge read into the record. “Furthermore, due to Mr. Linwood’s felony convictions, his shares in the software company are hereby transferred to you as restitution for the attempted fraud.”

Clara nodded respectfully, absorbing the massive victory. She had walked into this courtroom months ago ready to surrender everything just to escape. Now, she was walking out as the sole owner of a multi-million-dollar estate.

“And most importantly,” Judge Holloway added, her eyes softening as she looked at Clara. “The court officially finalizes the permanent adoption decree. Violet Linwood is now legally your daughter in every sense of the word. Mr. Linwood’s parental rights have been permanently and irrevocably terminated.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” Clara said, her voice thick with emotion. “More than you know.”

Clara walked out of the courthouse, the heavy autumn sun warming her face. Eleanor Vance walked beside her, carrying a sleek leather briefcase.

“You did it, Clara,” Eleanor said, offering a rare, genuine smile. “You fought a monster and you won.”

“We won,” Clara corrected, pulling the fierce attorney into a tight hug.

Clara drove back to the sprawling suburban house. She walked through the front door, the scent of fresh cookies and the sound of childish laughter filling the warm air. It wasn't a house haunted by lies anymore; it was a home built on truth, resilience, and unconditional love.
