Chapter 16 - The Money Trail

|

Marcus Thorne stood frozen, completely obliterated by the unwavering, devastating honesty of a six-year-old child. The jury was staring at him with open, unadulterated disgust.

Thorne had tried to bully a child, and the child had firmly, publicly destroyed his entire defense.

“No further questions, Your Honor,” Thorne muttered, retreating to the defense table in absolute defeat.

Violet stepped down from the stand, running directly into Clara’s waiting arms. The courtroom let out a collective sigh of relief as Clara carried her brave daughter back to the gallery.

With the audio recording officially verified by the most credible witness imaginable, the prosecution moved in for the final kill.

They called an elite forensic accountant to the stand, a woman who specialized in unraveling complex international fraud. For three grueling hours, the accountant dismantled Gabriel’s entire financial empire on a massive projector screen for the jury to see.

She showed exactly how Gabriel had forged documents to gain access to Violet’s trust fund. She tracked every single wire transfer, showing the money moving from a local bank in Minnesota, through a series of untraceable shell companies, and landing directly in an offshore account in the Cayman Islands registered under Samantha Drake’s name.

She produced receipts for luxury vacations, diamond necklaces, and the lease agreement for the downtown penthouse, all funded by the stolen inheritance of a grieving child.

Gabriel sat with his head in his hands, completely unable to look at the jury. His pristine reputation as a brilliant software CEO was reduced to ashes. He wasn't a businessman; he was a pathetic, greedy thief who had tried to murder his pregnant wife to cover up his crimes.

The prosecution rested its case.

The defense didn't even bother calling any witnesses. They knew it was over. Gabriel’s goose was completely, irrevocably cooked.
