Chapter 6: The Rebirth of an Empire

The transition of NexusCore from a bleeding, disgraced tech startup to a premium subsidiary of Sterling Global Holdings took exactly forty-eight hours. While the media was still dissecting the viral paparazzi photos of Matthew being led out of the hospital in handcuffs, I was already sitting in the corner office on the 42nd floor of the Sterling Tower.

The scent of crushed orchids and bourbon was gone, replaced by the crisp aroma of dark roast coffee and expensive leather.

"The media is having a field day, Clare," my father said, walking into my office with a stack of financial prints. "But the market is reacting precisely how I predicted. The moment your name was announced as CEO, institutional investors stopped shorting the stock. They know the Sterling name means stability."

"It's not just about stability, Daddy," I said, spinning my chair to face him. I was wearing a sharp, tailored ivory suit—a deliberate choice to contrast the dark, suffocating memories of Matthew’s penthouse. "Stability keeps us alive. Innovation makes us dangerous. Matthew was trying to sell our core data logistics to a logistics firm in Europe just to cover his personal debts. I’ve halted the sale."

My father smiled, a rare, genuine expression of pride. "And what do you plan to do with that data?"

"I’m going to integrate it into Sterling Global’s supply chain management. We aren't just saving NexusCore. We’re going to use it to swallow our competitors whole."

Before my father could reply, my new executive assistant, Elena, knocked gently on the glass door.

"Miss Sterling? There’s a gentleman downstairs from Vance Legal Partners. He says he’s the lead prosecutor assigned to your criminal case against Matthew Hayes. His name is Julian Vance."

My father’s eyebrows shot up. "Julian Vance? The man hasn't taken a domestic battery case in a decade. He usually handles multi-billion-dollar corporate fraud for the state."

"Tell him to come up, Elena," I said, tightening my ponytail. "If Matthew wanted a war, I’m going to make sure he gets a historic one."
