Chapter 11: The Verdict of Shadows

The final day of The State of New York v. Matthew Hayes felt less like a legal proceeding and more like an execution. Lauren Thorne’s testimony had been devastating. From the witness stand, she had detailed every offshore account, every hidden asset, and every bitter, resentful comment Matthew had made about me while drinking in their hidden Hamptons estate.

When it was Matthew’s turn to speak, his lawyers desperately tried to stop him. But his pride wouldn't let him stay silent. He took the stand, his eyes bloodshot, his tailored suit now looking like a shroud.

"I built NexusCore," Matthew snarled, glaring at the jury, his voice cracking with the same unstable rage he had unleashed in our penthouse. "Clare was just a secretary with a fancy last name! She wants you to think she’s a victim, but she used her father's billions to choke my company, to freeze my accounts, to trap me!"

Julian Vance didn't even look up from his notepad. He stood up slowly, walked to the center of the courtroom, and looked at Matthew with a chilling serenity.

"Mr. Hayes," Julian said softly, his voice cutting through the tension. "When you struck your wife twenty times with an antique hickory cane, was that also because of her father's billions?"

Matthew’s jaw tightened. He opened his mouth to speak, but only a choked, hateful sound came out.

The jury took exactly forty-five minutes to return a verdict.

"On the count of aggravated felony assault, we find the defendant, Matthew Hayes, guilty. On the count of grand larceny and corporate conspiracy, guilty."

The judge didn't show an ounce of mercy. "Matthew Hayes, you acted with a profound, calculated cruelty born of fragile ego and greed. I sentence you to twenty-five years at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, with no possibility of parole."

As the guards moved in to chain his ankles, Matthew looked at me one last time, begging with his eyes. I didn't look back. I turned to my father and Julian, stepping out of the courtroom and into the blinding light of freedom.
