Chapter 19 - The Thanksgiving Gathering

|

Thanksgiving at my house was usually a quiet affair.

Not this year.

The house was bursting with noise.

Emma and Leo were running laps around the living room, chasing Michael, who had foolishly engaged them in a game of monster.

David was in the kitchen, helping Audrey coordinate the massive dinner operation.

I sat in my armchair, watching the chaos.

It was loud. It was messy. It was perfect.

Audrey walked over and handed me a glass of wine.

“You look entirely too comfortable,” she teased.

“I am observing the structural integrity of the family unit,” I replied.

“And?”

“It holds.”

She sat on the arm of my chair.

“David looks good.”

“He’s tired. Single parenting is hard work.”

“But he’s not scared anymore.”

“No.”

She looked at me.

“You went to Seattle and did the exact same thing you did for me.”

“I didn't kick a door down in Seattle.”

“You kicked a different kind of door down.”

She rested her head against my shoulder.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For answering the phone. Both times.”

“That’s the job.”

Dinner was chaotic.

Leo spilled gravy on the tablecloth. Emma declared she hated turkey and only wanted rolls.

David handled it with practiced patience.

Michael and Audrey traded exasperated, loving glances.

I watched my children.

They had both walked into traps. They had both been dismantled by people who viewed love as leverage.

But they were sitting here now.

Laughing. Complaining about the traffic. Arguing over sports.

The trauma hadn't destroyed them. It had reshaped them.

They were stronger. Smarter.

And they were together.

After dinner, David and I stood on the back porch.

The air was crisp and smelled like woodsmoke.

“It’s good to be back,” David said.

“It’s good to have you back.”

He looked at the dark treeline.

“I thought I ruined my life, Dad.”

“You didn't. You just took a bad detour.”

May you like

“A long one.”

“Doesn't matter. You’re back on the main road.”
