The next day, while the kids were at a temporary preschool program, I told David everything.
About Julian. The mansion. The isolation. The rescue. The trial.
He listened in stunned silence.
“I had no idea.”
“How could you? You were across the country, and Julian made sure she didn't communicate with anyone.”
“I should have called.”
“She wouldn't have been allowed to answer.”
David looked sick.
“Sarah... she’s not like Julian. She never threatened me physically.”
“Control doesn't always leave bruises,” I said, echoing the words Audrey had used a hundred times. “Julian used a gated estate. Sarah used a bank account. The result is the same. Isolation. Dependence. Fear.”
David nodded slowly.
“She always made me feel like I was lucky she tolerated me.”
“That’s the trick.”
“How did Audrey survive it?”
“She survived it by realizing that the shame didn't belong to her.”
I looked at my son.
“You trusted your wife. That is not a flaw. The flaw is in the person who exploits that trust.”
David was quiet for a long time.
“I need to call Audrey.”
“You do.”
He made the call later that afternoon.
I didn't listen, but I saw his face when he hung up.
He looked lighter.
The burden of feeling like the only fool in the world had been lifted.
Audrey had told him what I couldn't: that the cage is invisible until you try to leave it.
The battle with Sarah raged for a year.
It was ugly, expensive, and emotionally draining.
