Chapter 17 - The Rossi Trap

Devan didn't reach for a weapon. He didn't even blink. He just stared at the piece of paper in the center of the table.
“A unanimous vote?” Devan asked quietly.
“Unanimous,” Rossi gloated, standing up from his chair. “You have no allies left, Devan. My men have the hotel surrounded. Leo and your guards are currently pinned down in the parking garage. You have no backup. You are completely, utterly alone.”
Rossi pulled a heavy revolver from his waistband and aimed it directly at Devan’s chest.
“Any last words, cripple?”
The six hundred men in the room watched in silence, waiting for the execution of the king.
Devan looked up at Rossi, a dark, terrifying amusement dancing in his hazel eyes.
“I am never alone, Emilio.”
Devan didn't move. He simply leaned back in his chair.
Naya stepped forward.
She reached up and tapped the hidden earpiece beneath her hair.
“Execute,” she said softly.
Suddenly, the massive double doors leading to the catering kitchens swung open violently.
But it wasn't Marshall soldiers who poured into the room. It was fifty hotel waiters, bartenders, and busboys wearing white aprons and black vests.
Rossi laughed. “What is this? You brought waiters to a gunfight?”
But Rossi’s laughter died in his throat as the catering staff reached beneath their silver serving trays and pulled out fully automatic submachine guns, leveling them at the center table.
At the same moment, the lights in the ballroom flickered. The heavy iron grates over the three main exits slammed shut and locked magnetically.
“You think my guards are pinned in the garage?” Devan asked, his voice cutting through the rising panic. “My guards aren't even at the hotel. Naya spent three years working in the catering union. She knows every hidden service tunnel, every freight elevator, and every kitchen worker in this city. She brought her own army.”

Naya stepped around the table, drawing her compact pistol and leveling it directly at Rossi’s head.
“Drop the gun, Mr. Rossi,” Naya commanded, her voice steady and lethal. “Or I will show you exactly what a common waitress is capable of.”
