Chapter 1 - The Cathedral's Silence

|
The cathedral doors did not open.
Forty-five minutes after the organist had played the final note, six hundred guests sat beneath the vaulted ceiling of Saint Jude’s Cathedral and watched Devan Marshall learn that humiliation had a sound.
It was the rustle of silk as society women leaned toward one another.
The scrape of expensive shoes as capos shifted in the pews.
The dry cough of a judge pretending not to stare.
The faint, vicious laughter of men who had spent years waiting for the most powerful boss on the eastern coast to look weak.
Devan heard all of it.
He sat at the altar in a chrome-and-black wheelchair, one hand resting on the joystick and the other curled around the armrest. Ten thousand white lilies crowded the sanctuary, releasing a sweet, suffocating scent that reminded him of graves.
His bride was gone.
Camilla Rossi had fled through the service entrance of the hotel an hour earlier, abandoning her veil, her bouquet, and a marriage meant to prevent bloodshed between two powerful families.
She had left a message on her dressing table.
"I cannot spend my life married to half a man."
Devan had read it once.
Then he had folded the paper into a square and placed it inside his jacket, pressing it flat against his chest.
His underboss, Leo Costa, moved to his side and bent as if adjusting the microphone, his face tight with controlled panic.
“She crossed the state line twenty minutes ago,” Leo murmured. “Her father says he had no knowledge.”
“He is lying.”
“Yes. Do we retaliate?”
“Has Rossi moved his men?”
“Not yet.”
“He will.”
Leo looked toward the restless congregation. “We should take you through the sacristy. The car is waiting.”
Devan kept his eyes on the crucifix above the altar.
“No.”
“Dom. Please.”
“If I leave through the back, every man in this church will remember me escaping.”
“They will remember she ran.”
May you like
“They will remember why.”
His voice remained low and even, a calm surface hiding a deep, violent undertow. That frightened Leo more than rage would have.
