Chapter 7: The Arrest

No one clapped. No one stood up to defend Evangelina. No one offered to call a fixer or a politician.

The Ibarra family, so incredibly proud of their prestigious name, their imported porcelain, and their country club memberships, discovered in real-time that luxury is not a shield when the truth arrives accompanied by a federal warrant.

As the officer secured the cold steel handcuffs around Evangelina's wrists, forcing her arms behind her back, she stopped struggling for a brief moment. She locked eyes with Renata, her face twisted in pure hatred, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at her.

"You ungrateful little rat," Evangelina hissed, her sophisticated facade completely destroyed, revealing the ugly, bitter woman underneath. "We picked you up from the dirt in Iztapalapa! We clothed you, we fed you, we made you something! You would be nothing without us!"

Renata stepped closer. She didn't shrink back. She leaned in, keeping her voice so low that only her mother-in-law could hear it over the commotion.

"You didn't pick me up from nothing, Evangelina," Renata whispered, her eyes completely devoid of pity. "You just mistook my silence for weakness. And you mistook my poverty for stupidity. Enjoy your new neighborhood."

As the officers grabbed Alonso by the arms and led him away, he looked back at her. He was pale, sweating profusely, and weeping openly like a child.

"Renata, please... don't let them do this! I love you! You know I love you! I can fix this!" he begged, his voice echoing down the restaurant hallway.

Renata looked down at the dried vinaigrette stain on her clearance-rack dress. She thought of all the dinners, all the holidays, all the quiet evenings where he had sat in cowardly silence while his mother slowly, methodically tore her self-esteem to pieces.

"You didn't love a wife, Alonso," Renata said loudly, ensuring he heard her before the doors closed. "You loved a convenient scapegoat. Goodbye."

She turned her back on them, picked up her purse, and walked out of the restaurant through a different door, leaving the stunned, silent Ibarra family sitting with their ruined anniversary cake.
