Chapter 20 - The Open Ending

|

Life at the Cole estate settled into a beautiful, chaotic rhythm. Nathan was happier than he had been in his entire life, balancing his empire with the demands of fatherhood. June was thriving in her new school, making friends, and slowly leaving the trauma of the system behind her.

But the past is rarely buried as deeply as we hope.

A year after the adoption was finalized, Nathan was sitting in his study late at night. The house was quiet. A cardboard box sat on his desk. It had arrived earlier that day via certified mail from the state of Ohio.

It was a box of Sarah’s remaining personal effects that the state had held in an evidence locker after her death, finally released and forwarded to her next of kin.

Nathan opened the box with a heavy heart. Inside were old photographs, a faded sweater, and a small, locked wooden jewelry box.

Nathan used a letter opener to carefully pry the fragile lock on the wooden box.

Inside, resting on a bed of velvet, was a tarnished silver key and a sealed envelope. The envelope had Nathan’s name written on it in Sarah’s familiar, looping handwriting. It was dated just two days before she died.

With trembling hands, Nathan broke the seal and unfolded the letter.

Nathan,

If you are reading this, I am gone. I am so sorry I ran away. I am so sorry I didn't come home. But I couldn't. I wasn't just hiding from Dad. I was hiding from the people Ray introduced me to.

Ray didn't just abandon us. He stole something from very dangerous people in Chicago, and he hid it in my name. The key in this box opens a safety deposit box at the First National Bank downtown. Inside is the leverage they have been hunting for.

They think I have it. And if they find out I had a daughter, they will think she has it.

Please, Nathan. Keep June safe. They never stop looking.

Love, Sarah.

Nathan stared at the letter, the blood freezing in his veins. The peaceful silence of his mansion suddenly felt like a trap waiting to spring.

Ray hadn't just been an extortionist. He had been a coward running from a syndicate, leaving his sick girlfriend and child as bait.

Nathan slowly picked up the tarnished silver key. He looked toward the hallway, where June was sleeping peacefully in her bed, completely unaware of the storm gathering on the horizon.

Nathan walked over to his desk drawer, opened it, and pulled out his private, encrypted phone. The billionaire CEO was gone. The fiercely protective father remained.

He dialed his head of security.

"Lock down the estate," Nathan ordered into the darkness. "We have a new problem."
