Chapter 19 - The New Normal

|

Six months later, the glass fortress didn't look like a fortress anymore.

The pristine white marble floors of the foyer were covered in a massive, colorful hopscotch rug. The sterile modern art on the walls had been replaced by framed, incredibly messy finger paintings. The quiet, efficient hum of the estate was constantly interrupted by the sound of laughter, running footsteps, and David’s terrible attempts at singing pop songs.

It was a Tuesday afternoon. Nathan was sitting in his home office, staring at a piece of paper on his desk.

It wasn't a logistics contract. It wasn't a hostile takeover bid.

It was a final decree of adoption, stamped and signed by the Allegheny County family court. The emergency kinship placement was officially over. June was legally, permanently, and irrevocably his daughter. June Cole.

The door to the office burst open.

June ran in, wearing a bright yellow dress and holding a plastic crown. She had grown an inch, her pale brown hair finally trimmed evenly and brushing her shoulders. The haunted, exhausted look in her gray eyes was completely gone, replaced by the bright, mischievous spark of a child who knew she was unconditionally loved.

"Uncle Nathan! Uncle David is cheating at Mario Kart again!" June announced indignantly, pointing a plastic wand toward the hallway.

David poked his head into the office, holding a video game controller. "I am not cheating! I just utilize superior tactical drifting! Tell her, Nathan!"

Nathan laughed, a deep, genuine sound that had become a regular occurrence in the house. He stood up, walking around his desk.

"I think the only way to settle this is for me to play the winner," Nathan declared, scooping June up and throwing her over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes, earning a delighted shriek of laughter from her.

As he carried her into the living room, June wrapped her arms around his neck.

"Dad?" she asked softly, using the word casually for the very first time.

Nathan stopped walking. His heart skipped a beat. He looked at her, his eyes shining. "Yes, sweetheart?"

"Can we make pancakes for dinner tonight?"

May you like

"We can make pancakes every night if you want," Nathan smiled, kissing her forehead.

The coupons were gone. The fear was gone. The billionaire who only cared about efficiency had finally discovered that the messiest, most unpredictable parts of life were the only things actually worth keeping.
