Chapter 7: Rosa’s Mirror

The storm outside the mansion matched the freezing silence inside.

Alejandro sat in his darkened study, his head in his hands. The multi-billion-dollar merger documents sat on his desk, looking completely worthless under the low lamp light.

The door opened slowly. Rosa walked in, carrying a tray of untouched tea. She didn't look at him with her usual deference.

"They aren't eating, Mr. Santillán," Rosa said, her voice heavy with disappointment.

"I had to secure the company, Rosa," Alejandro groaned, looking up with bloodshot eyes. "Julian Vance was going to strip my chairmanship. Everything I do, I do to ensure they have a future."

Rosa set the tray down with a sharp clack.

"Do you honestly think those little girls care about corporate shares?" Rosa demanded, her voice rising. "Trust is a fragile glass vase, Alejandro. You glued it back together on Christmas morning, but you forgot that even a single drop of neglect can make the cracks split wide open again."

Alejandro winced.

"They think you lied to them," Rosa continued, looking him dead in the eye. "They think the nice father from Christmas was just a character you played because you felt guilty. If you step on a jet to London tomorrow, don't expect them to be waiting when you come back. You cannot buy forgiveness twice."
