Chapter 6: The Fractured Promise

Chapter 6: The Fractured Promise
The school auditorium was filled with the low chatter of parents and the scent of polished wood. It was the girls' first piano recital since their mother had passed away.
In the front row, four small seats were reserved. Rosa sat in one, her eyes constantly darting toward the heavy oak doors at the back of the room.
The performance began.
Valeria and her sisters walked onto the stage in matching velvet dresses, their little hands trembling. Valeria looked out into the crowd, her eyes searching the sea of faces for the one that mattered most.
The seat next to Rosa was empty.
At that exact moment, twenty miles away, Alejandro was trapped in a glass boardroom. Julian Vance had intentionally delayed the contract signings, dragging out legal technicalities to keep him pinned.
"Just sign the final addendum, Alejandro, and you can go back to your little domestic paradise," Julian said, offering a gold pen with a smug grin.
Alejandro checked his watch. 7:15 PM. The recital had started fifteen minutes ago.
He ripped the pen from Julian’s hand, slammed his signature onto the paper, and bolted out of the room without saying a word. He drove through the pouring rain like a madman, his heart hammering against his ribs.
By the time his tires screeched into the school parking lot, the crowd was already filtering out.
He ran down the corridor, breathless, only to find Rosa waiting by the exit. The four girls stood behind her, their heads bowed, holding their participation ribbons tightly.
Valeria looked up, her hazel eyes completely empty of the joy they had held on Christmas morning.
“You said you’d be there,” she whispered, her voice cracking. “You promised.”

“Valeria, listen to me, the traffic—the board meeting—” Alejandro stammered, dropping to his knees.
“You’re just like before,” Valeria said, stepping back from his reaching hands. “Money is still your favorite daughter.”
