Chapter 5 - The Velvet Trunks

|

For ten agonizing minutes, the grand mansion transformed from a luxurious home into a tense, heavily guarded holding cell.

Arthur had taken six armed estate security officers up to the east wing. Martha and Phoebe had occupied a massive, private two-bedroom suite up there—a perk of Martha’s deep manipulation of the old Blair. Now, Carter and Jackson were detained in the foyer, their weapons and badges confiscated, their faces burning with a mix of humiliation and confusion.

Phoebe remained slumped on the floor, weeping silently into her hands. Martha paced like a caged animal, biting her fingernails, muttering desperate prayers under her breath.

I calmly took a seat in my father’s antique leather chair, crossing my legs, letting the silence torture them.

Then, the elevator pinged.

Arthur emerged, leading his team of guards. Behind him, the officers were dragging heavy velvet-lined trunks, designer leather luggage, locked jewelry safe-boxes, and canvas bank deposit bags.

The remaining staff gasped in collective horror.

Arthur unlatched the first trunk and flipped the lid back. It was a treasure trove of haute couture. Vintage Chanel jackets, Valentino evening gowns, and rare Hermès Birkin bags—some still wrapped in their original tissue paper. Every shoe was exactly Phoebe’s size. Every dress still held tags displaying five-figure price tags.

He moved to the second box, snapping the locks.

Jewelry spilled across the dark velvet like frozen fire. Sapphire teardrop earrings, emerald brooches, diamond tennis bracelets, and heavy gold Rolex watches. Pieces custom-made for my mother, stolen straight from the family's private, supposedly impenetrable vault.

The third trunk didn't contain clothes or gems. It contained cash. Stacks and stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills.

Arthur stood up straight, brushing a speck of dust from his sleeve. His voice was devastatingly calm. “A preliminary visual estimate, Miss Whitmore, places the stolen assets here at approximately twenty-five million dollars.”

Martha’s knees gave out. She collapsed into a mahogany chair, hyperventilating.

“Mom?” Phoebe whimpered, staring at the unimaginable mountain of wealth her mother had hoarded.

“Six years of meticulous theft,” Arthur continued, handing me a stack of papers. “We found duplicate vault keys, doctored inventory sheets, and dozens of forged authorization letters bearing your exact signature.”

Carter stared at Phoebe, his jaw dropping. Jackson swallowed hard. “Phoebe... you told us Preston bought you all those designer bags.”

Phoebe’s face twisted in panic. “I—I thought he did! I didn't know!”

“Ah, Preston,” I murmured. The adopted brother. The plot was finally thickening.
