Chapter 13 - A New Empire

|

Panic erupted in the boardroom. My lead attorney, seated quietly in the corner, offered the frantic directors a terrifyingly polite smile.

Preston stood up so violently his heavy leather chair rolled backward and slammed into the wall. “You can’t do this, Blair! You can’t just walk in here and remove half the board of directors in a single morning! The bylaws require a quorum and a transition period!”

“I already have your replacements waiting in the lobby,” I replied.

I nodded to Arthur. He opened the heavy double doors.

Four new directors walked in. Two brilliant women poached from our clean-energy division, a retired, ruthless federal prosecutor, and a young private equity strategist who owed absolutely zero loyalty to Preston or his old-boys club. Their onboarding packets were already signed. Their proxy votes were legally secured.

Preston stared at the new arrivals, and then slowly turned his gaze back to me. For the first time since he came to live with us at twelve years old, my adopted brother looked small. He looked utterly defeated.

“You think this makes you powerful?” Preston hissed, leaning over the table, his voice shaking with rage. “You’re burning the entire family legacy down to the ground.”

“No, Preston,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “I’m fumigating it.”

By noon, the massacre was complete. Preston had been formally removed from every corporate role and banned from the premises. Harold Vance and three other compromised directors resigned in disgrace before the federal referrals were made public.

The stock market reacted exactly as we expected. Whitmore shares dipped sharply for exactly forty-seven minutes amid the chaos, and then skyrocketed when our crisis team released a brilliantly worded press statement announcing aggressive anti-corruption reforms and dynamic new leadership.

Competence was a wonderful, devastating revenge.
