Chapter 17 - The Siege of the Rinaldi Estate

|
The heavy mahogany front doors of the mansion burst open with a violent crash, instantly splintering off their hinges under the force of a battering ram.
Ten heavily armed Moretti assassins flooded into the grand foyer, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the area with laser sights. Rain poured in through the broken doorway, slicking the expensive marble floors.
“Sweep the ground floor! Find the bedroom!” the lead assassin barked into his radio.
They moved quickly, arrogantly, believing the false intelligence Lorenzo had fed them. They expected a sleeping, crippled boss protected by traitorous guards.
Instead, they stepped right into a slaughterhouse.
Before the assassins could even reach the grand staircase, the massive floodlights in the foyer suddenly snapped on, blinding them.
“Now,” Matteo’s voice echoed over the mansion’s intercom system, terrifyingly loud and calm.
From the balconies above, from the darkened hallways to the left and right, Matteo’s most loyal, elite guards opened fire simultaneously. The ambush was perfectly executed. The crossfire was devastating and immediate.
Deafening gunfire echoed through the mansion, shredding the expensive artwork and shattering crystal vases. The Moretti assassins panicked, caught completely in the open, dropping rapidly under the relentless assault.
Inside the darkened study, Matteo listened to the chaos with cold satisfaction. He didn't need to walk to command an army. His mind was the most dangerous weapon in the house.
Suddenly, the study doors burst open.
Two Moretti assassins, having managed to slip away from the massacre in the foyer, rushed into the room, their guns raised.
They couldn't see clearly in the dark, but they saw the silhouette of a man in a wheelchair.

Before they could pull their triggers, Matteo fired twice. Two perfect, center-mass shots. The assassins crumpled to the floor instantly.
The king was defending his own castle.
