Chapter 12 - The Interrogation

|

Lorenzo’s face lost whatever tiny fraction of color it had left. He vehemently shook his head, taking a panicked step backward.

“No! Boss, I swear on my mother’s life, I had nothing to do with the ambush!” Lorenzo cried out, his voice cracking. “It was the Moretti family! They wanted your territory! I just… I just took advantage of the situation after it happened. I’m an opportunist, Matteo, but I am not a traitor!”

Matteo stared at him, analyzing every twitch, every drop of sweat, reading him like a book. Lorenzo was a greedy snake, but he was also a coward. To organize a hit on Matteo Rinaldi took iron courage, something Lorenzo desperately lacked.

Matteo slowly turned his head to his left, looking at the beautiful, trembling woman sitting beside him.

“Is that true, Celeste?” Matteo asked quietly.

Celeste openly sobbed now, mascara running down her flawless cheeks. She reached out with trembling hands, trying to touch Matteo’s arm, but he pulled away in disgust.

“Matteo, please,” she begged, tears spilling onto the expensive silk of her dress. “I was terrified! When you were shot, everyone said you were going to die. I was alone. I didn't know how to survive in this world without you. Lorenzo told me he could protect me. I only went along with it out of fear!”

Matteo let her cry. He felt absolutely nothing for her in that moment. The woman he loved had died the moment he heard her toast to his ruin from the bedroom upstairs.

“You toasted to survival,” Matteo said coldly. “Whose survival, Celeste? Mine? Or yours?”

“Yours! Always yours!” she lied desperately.

Matteo sighed heavily, rubbing his forehead as if he had a terrible migraine.

“Elena,” Matteo called out, his voice tired but firm.

“Yes, Mr. Rinaldi,” Elena replied immediately from behind him.

“Lock the doors to the estate,” Matteo ordered without looking back. “No one leaves.”
