Chapter 9 - The Ghost of Moretti

Before Anton could pull the trigger, Saraphina struck.
With blinding speed born of childhood training long buried in her subconscious, she swept her leg through the mud, kicking Anton’s right knee with enough force to shatter the joint.
Anton screamed, his leg buckling beneath him as he crashed face-first into the dirt. The gold-plated pistol flew from his grasp, sliding across the wet grass toward Elias.
Elias surged upward with a feral roar. He drove his elbow backward into the throat of the guard pinning his right arm, broke the man's grip, and threw his weight sideways, knocking the second mercenary off balance.
In a fraction of a second, Elias scooped Anton’s gun from the mud.
He didn't hesitate. Three shots echoed through the downpour like thunderclaps. The two mercenaries collapsed instantly into the mud.
The remaining three guards outside opened fire, but Saraphina had already rolled toward the patio table, grabbing the tactical shotgun dropped by the fallen guard. She racked the slide with a fluid, terrifying familiarity and fired two deafening blasts through the wooden fence, neutralizing the snipers before they could adjust their aim.
Silence returned to the clearing, heavy and suffocating, broken only by the sound of Anton sobbing in agony on the ground, clutching his ruined knee.
The rain beat down upon them, washing away the blood and soot.
Elias stepped forward, the barrel of the gold pistol pointed directly between Anton’s eyes.
"Finish what you were saying," Elias commanded, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated venom. "Who was she, Anton? Whose ward was she?!"
Anton looked up, blood bubbling between his teeth as he let out a broken, wheezing laugh.
"You fool..." Anton coughed, spitting crimson onto Elias's boots. "Your father Vincent... he was a monster. He didn't want a protector for you. He wanted a sacrifice."
Elias's finger tightened on the trigger. "Explain."
"The *Croce d'Ombra* wasn't a mark of honor," Anton gasped, his eyes darting toward Saraphina, who stood ten feet away, the shotgun resting easily against her hip. "It was a locator beacon. A surgical incision where your father implanted the master encryption key to the family's Swiss reserves. He used a child from his mistress—a half-blood sister you never knew existed—so that if the compound ever fell, the money would leave with her!"
Elias stopped breathing. The world seemed to stop spinning.
He slowly turned his head to look at Saraphina.
She stood in the rain, her clothes ruined, the mark on her back burning like fire. The piece of information clicked into place with horrifying precision: the missing birth records, the identical hazel eyes she shared with his mother's portraits, the instinct that had driven her across an entire ocean to protect little Leo.
"Sister?" Saraphina whispered, her voice barely audible over the wind.
"Vincent never loved either of you," Anton mocked, laughing through his pain. "You were his soldier, Elias. And she was his bank vault. And now... now the whole world knows she's alive. Every family from Palermo to New York is coming for her."
A single gunshot silenced him forever.

Elias lowered the smoking gun, his arm dropping to his side. He didn't look at Anton's lifeless body. He only looked at Saraphina.
