Chapter 9 - The Alliance

|

The estate went into complete lockdown. Heavily armed guards patrolled the corridors, and the steel shutters on the windows were permanently closed. The beautiful mansion had become a war bunker.

Elias set up a command center in the library. He stood over a massive blueprint of the estate and the surrounding coastal roads, barking orders into a secure phone.

Seraphina sat on the leather sofa, watching him. She was no longer a prisoner; she was a partner.

“Silvio has fled the compound,” Elias announced, hanging up the phone. “He took three loyal capos and retreated to his fortress in the mountains. He knows the assassination failed. He’s rallying the commission, claiming I have gone mad and brought a Falcone ghost into our home.”

“If the other families believe him, they will back his coup,” Seraphina said softly.

Elias looked at her, his eyes dark with grim reality. “Yes. They will send an army to wipe us out. I need leverage to turn the commission against him.”

“The listening device,” Seraphina suggested, standing up and walking to the table. “If Silvio planted the bug in the south parlor, he must have a server where the recordings are stored. The audio files proving his betrayal.”

“He wouldn't keep the server at his mountain fortress. It’s too risky,” Elias mused, rubbing his jaw. “He would hide it somewhere mundane. Somewhere no one would look.”

Seraphina’s mind raced, thinking back to the three years she had spent observing the daily routines of the household.

“The wine cellar,” she said suddenly.

Elias frowned. “I have that cellar swept for bugs every month.”

“Not the cellar itself. The sub-basement beneath it,” Seraphina explained, tapping the blueprint. “When Leo was hiding down there, I noticed a strange hum coming from behind the ventilation grate. I thought it was the HVAC system, but it was too loud. It sounded like cooling fans for a server rack.”

Elias stared at her, a look of profound, dangerous admiration spreading across his face.

“You are incredible,” he murmured, grabbing his weapon. “Stefan! Get the breaching tools. We are going to the basement.”

They descended into the damp, dark cellar. Stefan used a heavy crowbar to pry the massive iron ventilation grate from the stone wall. Behind it lay a narrow, hidden access tunnel.

Elias crawled inside, his flashlight illuminating a sleek, modern server rack hidden perfectly in the ancient stonework.

“Got it,” Elias said, pulling a specialized hard drive from the rack.

He climbed back out, a victorious, cruel smile on his lips. He hooked the drive up to his encrypted laptop right there in the cellar.

The audio files loaded instantly. Elias clicked the most recent file.

The voice of Silvio echoed from the speakers, speaking to an unknown associate.

“The girl is a problem. Elias is obsessed with her. If he marries her, the Falcone loyalists will align with him, and his power will be absolute. Send the assassin tonight. Make it look like a robbery gone wrong. Once the girl is dead, Elias will be reckless, and we can take the throne.”

Elias closed the laptop with a loud, definitive snap.

“We have the proof,” Elias whispered, his gray eyes burning with absolute murder. “Now, we go to war.”
