Chapter 16 - The Shift in Power

|

Gio did not scream. He did not throw the book into the fire. The reaction was far more terrifying. He went entirely still, the emotion draining from his face, replaced by the hollow, dead-eyed stare of a man who had just accepted that he had to slaughter his own bloodline.

"He sat at my table," Gio whispered, his voice cracking with a horrifyingly quiet betrayal. "He hugged my mother at the funeral. He kissed my cheek and told me he would guide me. And he murdered my father."

Isadora reached out, her small hand covering his large, scarred one resting on the ledger.

"He manipulated you, Giovanni," Isadora said softly. "But he underestimated you. And he failed to kill you tonight."

Gio turned his hand over, tangling his fingers with hers. He looked at her, his eyes dark, desperate pools.

"I have to kill him," Gio stated, a fatalistic vow. "I have to dismantle half my own empire, purge every capo loyal to him, and burn my own house to the ground to cleanse this treason."

"Then we burn it," Isadora said fiercely, leaning forward, her face inches from his. "We tear it down and build it back stronger."

The fierce, unapologetic loyalty in her voice broke the last remaining barrier holding Gio back.

He didn't hesitate. He leaned in, his lips crashing against hers with a desperate, consuming hunger. The kiss wasn't gentle; it was bruised and urgent, fueled by the adrenaline of near-death and the terrifying realization of how much they had to lose.

Isadora kissed him back with equal ferocity, her hands tangling in his dark, damp hair, pulling him closer. Gio groaned, lifting her effortlessly from the sofa, carrying her toward the bedroom without breaking the kiss.

They fell onto the mattress in a tangle of ruined velvet and wet clothes. Gio’s hands were everywhere, worshipping her, claiming her, erasing the terror of the night with absolute, undeniable passion.

"You were supposed to be my escape," Gio murmured against her neck, his breath hot against her skin. "Instead, you are my salvation."

"I am not a saint, Giovanni," she gasped as his lips trailed down her collarbone.

"Good," he growled, looking deep into her eyes. "Because saints do not survive in my world. But queens do."
