Chapter 14 - The Ambush

|

Isadora froze, her hand instinctively clutching the bag containing the ledger.

"Isadora?" Gio’s voice crackled urgently in her ear. "The cameras just came back online. The mezzanine is flooded with men. Do not step off that elevator!"

"Hand over the book, little bird," Silvio said smoothly, raising his pistol and aiming it directly at her chest. "And I promise your death will be quick. If you make me take it from you, I will let my men have their fun first."

Panic, cold and sharp, pierced her chest. She had no weapon. She was trapped in a metal box.

"Isadora, get down!" Gio’s voice roared through the earpiece.

Isadora didn't hesitate. She threw herself flat onto the floor of the elevator just as a deafening explosion rocked the entire building.

Gio had kept his promise. He had blown the power grid.

The lights in the bank instantly died, plunging the hallway and the elevator into absolute, pitch-black darkness. Emergency sirens began to wail, a chaotic, high-pitched scream.

"Kill her!" Silvio shouted in the dark.

Automatic gunfire shredded the interior of the elevator, bullets sparking violently against the metal walls. Isadora crawled frantically backward, pressing herself into the corner, praying the darkness would shield her.

Through the chaos, a new sound erupted. The heavy, rhythmic thud of a tactical shotgun.

Gio had not waited at the rendezvous point.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark hallway like strobe lights. Gio moved like a demon in the shadows, firing with devastating accuracy, dropping Silvio’s men one by one.

"Gio!" Silvio roared, firing blindly into the dark. "You are destroying your own family for a whore!"

"You aren't my family!" Gio snarled from the darkness.

A bullet shattered the glass panel of the elevator. Gio sprinted through the crossfire, diving into the elevator car right beside Isadora.

"Are you hit?" he demanded, grabbing her arms in the dark.

"No, I’m okay," she gasped, gripping his jacket.

"We have to move. The police will be here in two minutes," Gio said, pulling her to her feet. He slammed the emergency override button, and the elevator began to drop rapidly toward the underground parking garage.

When the doors opened in the basement, Luca was waiting in a sleek, high-speed speedboat moored in the subterranean water canal that fed into the Bay of Naples.

"Get in!" Luca yelled over the roar of the boat’s massive engine.

Gio practically threw Isadora into the boat before vaulting in after her. Luca slammed the throttle forward, and the boat shot out of the dark tunnel, launching violently into the freezing, rain-swept waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
