Chapter 1 - The Ink Stain

|

The first sound Luca Ferraro heard inside his mansion was not the blaring of the perimeter alarm system. It was not the heavy footsteps of his armed security team, nor the polished, overly formal voice of his estate director announcing his arrival.

It was a child whispering to herself in the laundry room.

“Come out, bad spot. Please come out.”

Luca stopped dead in the service corridor, one hand still buried deep inside the pocket of his black cashmere overcoat.

He was not supposed to be home. A high-stakes territory negotiation in Washington had ended six hours early, primarily because three rival board members finally understood that Luca Ferraro did not bluff when he threatened to dismantle their operations. His private jet had touched down in New York shortly after noon. Instead of calling ahead to prepare the staff, he had dismissed his driver at the lower iron gates and walked up the driveway alone.

He had wanted silence. The specific, heavy kind of silence that usually waited for him inside the Ferraro estate.

It was a massive property. Forty rooms. Twelve sprawling acres overlooking the cold, gray waters of Long Island Sound. It was built with thick limestone walls, bullet-resistant windows, and enough hidden security cameras to make every single visitor hyper-conscious of exactly where they placed their hands.

Luca had inherited the house, and the criminal empire attached to it, at twenty-four. Now, fifteen years later, he had never once managed to make it feel like a home.

The small, desperate voice came again.

“Please. Mr. Luca needs it clean.”

He moved silently toward the half-open door of the laundry room.

A small wooden step-stool had been pushed haphazardly against the deep, stainless-steel utility sink. Standing precariously on top of it was Nora Vega, the three-year-old daughter of Elena, one of the estate’s newest housekeepers.

Nora wore a faded yellow dress covered in tiny white clouds. Both sleeves were rolled haphazardly above her elbows, though one had already fallen down, soaking into the soapy water. Her dark hair was tied into two uneven, messy pigtails, and her bare feet balanced nervously near the slippery edge of the stool.

In her tiny hands was one of Luca’s custom-tailored white dress shirts.

The shirt had cost more than Elena earned in two weeks of exhausting labor.

Nora was attacking a dark blue ink stain near the French cuff with a stiff, bristled scrubbing brush. Soap bubbles covered her small fingers. Water splashed over the edge of the sink, pooling dangerously on the marble floor. The fragile skin across her knuckles was flushed pink from her frantic, desperate effort.

Luca stood in the doorway, staring at her without speaking.
