CHAPTER 8: UNVEILING THE FRAUD
With the Romanos declaring open corporate war, Mateo ordered his private security team to dig into the past. He sat with Sofia in a quiet corner of his private estate while little Lucia slept upstairs. The laptop screen illuminated their faces.
“Look at this, Sofia,” Mateo said, pointing to an encrypted accounting file from five years ago.
Sofia leaned closer, her brow furrowed.
“Those are the medical receipts for my mother's treatment,” she noted.
“I thought they were paid by an anonymous hospital charity.”
Mateo’s jaw tightened.
“They weren't paid by a charity. I set up a trust fund for you back then, before my board took control.”
“But look who intercepted the routing numbers.”
The digital signature at the bottom of the block read: Valeria Romano.
Valeria hadn't just accidentally run into Sofia at the kitchen banquet. She had been systematically tracking her, intercepting the financial help Mateo tried to send blindly, ensuring Sofia remained poor, hidden, and broken. Sofia covered her mouth as a cold shock washed over her.

“She wanted me to stay in the dark forever,” Sofia whispered.
“She wanted our daughter to think you forgot her,” Mateo concluded, his voice vibrating with rage.
