Chapter 3: The Groom’s Cruelty

The wedding day was supposed to be a triumph. But for Eleanor, it was a slow-motion car crash. She watched from the front row as James, her son, walked toward the altar.

James was a charming man, at least on the surface. But Eleanor knew him. She knew he was ambitious, cold, and calculated—traits she had inadvertently nurtured in him. As Lily walked down the aisle, looking ethereal despite the years on the dress, Eleanor saw James’s face. He wasn't looking at Lily with love; he was looking at her with an appraising, condescending stare.

Eleanor felt a surge of protectiveness, a feeling she had never experienced in her life. She realized James didn't love Lily. He loved the idea of a "humble" girl he could mold, someone he could control and eventually discard when he climbed higher on the social ladder.

During the vows, James leaned in to whisper something to Lily. Eleanor’s hearing, sharp and keen, caught it.

"Don't worry," James murmured with a tight smile. "We'll burn that hideous dress the moment we get home. I won't have my wife looking like a pauper."

Lily’s smile faltered, her shoulders slumping.

Eleanor felt a rage boil in her chest that she hadn't felt in decades. This was her daughter-in-law. Her niece. Her family. And she had allowed this man—her own son—to treat her like a prize to be cleaned up rather than a person to be cherished.

Eleanor stood up.

The entire church went silent. The priest paused. James looked back, irritation flashing in his eyes. "Mother? Please, sit down."

Eleanor didn't sit. She walked toward the altar, her heels echoing like gavel strikes. She looked at James, then at Lily, and finally at the audience of wealthy, judgmental elite who were waiting for her to deliver a scathing critique.

"I have something to say," Eleanor announced. Her voice didn't waver.
