Chương 18 - Ghost of the Black Sea

The convoy crossed the George Washington Bridge just past midnight, cutting through the dense fog hanging over the Hudson River.

Manhattan rose before them like a forest of glittering obsidian, but the city felt wrong. An eerie stillness hung in the air, the kind of heavy, charged pressure that preceded an offshore hurricane.

Mikhail turned from the front passenger seat, his face pale in the green glow of the tactical tablet resting on his knees.

“Boss,” Mikhail said, his voice tight with alarm. “The perimeter sensors at the TriBeCa compound just went dark. All fourteen camera feeds cut out simultaneously sixty seconds ago.”

Soren’s eyes snapped to the front. “Emergency power backup?”

“Offline. The internal fiber-optic lines were severed from the utility grid beneath the street.” Mikhail racked the slide of his combat rifle, chambering a round. “Moreau wasn't just working for Kozlov. He had the master override codes to the building’s security vaults.”

“Reroute the convoy,” Soren commanded coldly. “Take the West Side Highway to the safehouse on 14th Street. Move!”

The lead SUV accelerated, but before the driver could execute the turn onto the ramp, the night exploded into violent light.

*BOOM!*

A blinding flash erupted from an abandoned delivery truck parked along the highway barrier. The shockwave lifted the lead SUV entirely off its tires, flipping the two-ton armored vehicle through the air before it crashed onto its roof in a screeching ball of twisted metal and orange flame.

“Ambush!” Mikhail roared, grabbing his radio. “Evasive maneuvers! Out, out, out!”

The driver of Soren’s Maybach slammed on the brakes, the heavy tires smoking against the asphalt as the car skidded sideways.

Through the tinted glass, Blythe saw dark figures emerge from the shadows of the industrial overpass. They weren't street thugs with cheap pistols. They were tactical operators dressed in black urban camouflage, wearing night-vision optics and carrying high-caliber assault weapons.

*Rat-tat-tat-tat-tat!*

A hail of armor-piercing rounds shattered the perimeter silence, slamming into the reinforced glass of the Maybach. Spiderweb cracks exploded across the windows, the glass groaning under the kinetic force of military-grade ammunition.

“Down!” Soren shoved Blythe to the floorboards, shielding her entire body with his own as the car rocked violently under the onslaught.

He pulled a customized submachine gun from beneath his seat, his jaw set in a line of murderous resolve.

“Stay behind me,” Soren ordered, his voice cutting through the deafening roar of gunfire. “No matter what happens, do not leave this vehicle until I clear the breach.”

“Soren, look out!” Blythe screamed, pointing toward the overpass above.

A figure stood on the concrete walkway overlooking the highway, framed against the smoke and flashing emergency lights. He was tall, heavily built, with a mane of white hair and a military trench coat that billowed in the wind. In his hands, he held a shoulder-mounted rocket launcher.

Dmitri Kozlov.
