Chương 15 - Poisoned Chalice

The tension in the grand ballroom was suffocating. Following Blythe’s defiance of Don Carmine, the gathering had fractured into tense murmurs and hurried conferences in shadowy alcoves.

Soren had been pulled into an adjacent private parlor by the remaining leaders of the Five Families to negotiate the division of Marko’s vacant territory. He had left Mikhail and three of his most lethal bodyguards standing three feet behind Blythe at all times.

Blythe stood near a high-topped mahogany table, watching the masquerade of wealth and blood.

A waiter dressed in a black waistcoat approached with a silver tray bearing flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon.

“Champagne, ma’am?” the waiter asked with a subservient bow.

Blythe reached out, but her hand paused two inches above the crystal glass.

Her years in the emergency trauma ward kicked in—not as an heiress or a gangster’s woman, but as a medical clinician.

The liquid in the flute had a barely perceptible yellowish film floating beneath the surface bubbles. Furthermore, the waiter’s right hand had a minute tremor, and his pupils were constricted—pinpoints beneath the chandelier lights. He wasn't nervous; he was focused, breathing through a controlled biological rhythm.

“Thank you,” Blythe said smoothly, picking up the flute by the stem.

The waiter offered a slight nod and turned to merge back into the crowd.

Blythe brought the glass close to her lips, inhaling delicately. Beneath the dry yeast and citrus aroma of the vintage champagne, there was a faint, bitter almond trace—cyanide derivative—coupled with a distinct metallic ozone scent that she recognized instantly from an overdose case she had treated six months ago.

*Succinylcholine mixed with potassium cyanide.* A paralytic neurotoxin designed to cause complete respiratory failure within ninety seconds while masking the death as a sudden catastrophic cardiac arrest.

“Mikhail,” Blythe whispered, not moving her lips.

The giant enforcer stepped in, leaning down so his ear was level with her mouth. “Yes, ma'am?”

“The waiter in the red bowtie, walking toward the service entrance behind the ice sculpture. He just tried to poison me.”

Mikhail’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal malice. “Are you certain?”

“Cyanide and paralytic base. I’d bet my medical license on it,” she said calmly, setting the poisoned flute down onto the marble table without spilling a drop. “Don’t shoot him. I need his pulse intact.”

Mikhail tapped his earpiece, speaking two words in Russian.

Across the room, two shadow operatives in dark suits moved with terrifying speed, cutting through the crowd like sharks through a school of tuna. Before the waiter could push through the swinging double doors into the kitchen, a massive hand caught him by the back of the neck, dragging him into the darkened corridor out of sight. The entire abduction took less than three seconds. The socialites drinking champagne ten feet away didn't even notice.

Blythe turned and walked with deliberate calm toward the heavy oak doors of the private parlor.

The two guards outside the council room moved to block her, but Mikhail stepped forward, his coat falling back to reveal the twin suppressed automatics strapped beneath his armpits.

“Out of the way,” Mikhail hissed.

The guards hesitated, recognizing the sheer bloodlust in Mikhail’s stance, and stepped aside. Blythe pushed the heavy doors open and walked inside.

The Circle of Five sat around a massive oval table of black slate. Maps, deeds, and manifests were scattered across the surface. Soren sat at the head, leaning back in his high-backed leather chair, looking bored while Don Carmine argued furiously.

The sudden intrusion made every man look up.

“What is the meaning of this?” Carmine barked, slamming his fist onto the slate. “This is a closed session!”

Blythe ignored the Don entirely. She walked straight up to Soren’s side, reached into her evening purse, and pulled out a small linen napkin containing the waiter’s discarded silver tray tag, which had an encrypted RFID chip embedded in the back.

“Someone just spiked my champagne with succinylcholine,” Blythe said, her voice cutting through the room with absolute clinical detachment. “Mikhail has the server in the basement cellar right now. The chip in his badge has a security clearance code registered to this table.”

Soren’s eyes went dead. The bored expression vanished, replaced by an aura so suffocatingly violent that two of the older council bosses visibly shifted back in their chairs.

Soren stood up slowly, towering over the assembly.

“Which one of you,” Soren whispered, the silence in the room turning into an execution chamber, “forgot that she is under my flag?”
