Chapter 18 - The Healed Mechanism|

Two weeks after Marcus Vance was arrested and escorted from the building in handcuffs, a quiet peace returned to the executive floor of Whitmore Confections.
On a snow-dusted Friday afternoon, a small package wrapped in brown parchment paper arrived at Hannah’s desk, sent via courier from ABERNATHY’S CLOCKWORKS.
Hannah carried the package into Ethan’s office.
Ethan looked up from his desk documents, his eyes softening the moment he saw her step inside. "Is that from Abernathy?"
"Yes," Hannah smiled softly, setting the package on his desk. "He said he finished it yesterday."
Ethan’s hands were remarkably steady as he cut the string and unwrapped the brown paper. Inside lay the antique rosewood music box.
The broken brass hinge had been replaced with a hand-forged piece of polished metal that blended seamlessly with the original 19th-century patina. The dust was gone, replaced by a rich, warm wooden luster.
Ethan lifted the delicate lid.
The internal governor spring caught smoothly, and the sweet, crystal-clear chime of Silent Night echoed through the warm office.
The melody filled every corner of the room—the same tune that had played on Christmas Eve, but this time, the notes didn't stop halfway through. They flowed smoothly, perfect and unbroken, to the very end of the song.
Ethan sat back in his chair, staring at the spinning brass cylinder. For the first time in four years, tears gathered in his gray eyes—not tears of agonizing grief, but of profound, quiet healing.

Hannah stood beside his desk, wiping a stray tear from her own cheek.
Ethan reached out, gently taking her hand into his. "Thank you, Hannah," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for breaking it."
