Chapter 14 - Shadow over the Gala|

Two weeks later, the annual Whitmore New Year’s Corporate Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the historic hotel downtown.
Huge crystal chandeliers illuminated tables dressed in silver silk and white orchids. Hundreds of Knoxville’s political and business elite gathered to toast the company's annual performance.
Ethan had insisted that Hannah attend as part of the executive staff. She wore a simple, elegant black dress, her brown hair styled in soft waves over her shoulders. She spent most of the evening standing near the edge of the ballroom, sipping sparkling water and feeling entirely out of her element.
Near the center stage, Eleanor Whitmore stood surrounded by three prominent board members and Marcus Vance.
"It is a tragedy," Marcus was saying loudly enough for nearby guests to hear, holding a glass of champagne. "Ethan's judgment has clearly been compromised since his tragedy. Promoting an uneducated custodian into high-level administration... it raises serious questions about leadership stability."
Eleanor nodded stiffly. "My son is letting personal sentiment interfere with corporate governance."
Hannah turned to slip quietly toward the exit, her cheeks burning with humiliation. She didn't belong in this world of tuxedos, silk, and cruel political games.
"Where are you going, Miss Mercer?"
Ethan stepped into her path, holding two glasses of sparkling water. He looked striking in a tailored black tuxedo, but his face was set in a hard, dangerous line.
"I don't belong here, Ethan," Hannah whispered, her eyes pleading. "They're talking about you. They're using me to make the board think you've lost your mind."
Ethan set the glasses down on a passing waiter's tray. Without a word, he grabbed Hannah’s hand—his fingers warm and firm against hers—and led her straight toward the center of the ballroom where his mother and Marcus stood.

The room grew quiet as the CEO approached the microphone near the podium.
"Good evening, everyone," Ethan’s voice echoed clearly through the grand ballroom speaker system.
