Chapter 13 - The Wolves in Suits

Helixion Systems had thirty-one board members, executive advisors, and major stakeholders. Most of them had adored Lucian, respected his vision, and completely underestimated me. Some of them were kind. Some were genuinely frightened about the stock price dropping. But some of them were already calculating how to exploit the chaos.
The interim CEO, a man named Malcolm Greer, firmly believed he could run the entire company while I stayed quietly in the nursery, minding the baby and blindly signing whatever legal documents Marcus placed before me. Malcolm smiled far too often when speaking to me. He consistently called me “Isabel” in a patronizing tone that made my own name sound like he was doing me a favor just by saying it.
The first emergency board meeting took place exactly ten days after the funeral. I attended via a secure video link from Lucian’s home office because my doctor had strictly forbidden me from traveling downtown.
Sitting in Lucian's heavy leather chair felt wrong; it was too large, and it smelled faintly of his cologne. His favorite fountain pen lay exactly where he always kept it, perfectly aligned with the top edge of a leather desk blotter. I touched the cool metal of the pen once for strength before the camera light clicked on.
Malcolm Greer opened the meeting with solemn, rehearsed condolences, then moved aggressively quickly to seize control of the narrative.
“In light of these truly extraordinary and tragic circumstances,” Malcolm said, looking directly into the camera with a slick smile, “the executive team strongly recommends establishing a temporary executive steering committee. This will relieve Mrs. Ashcroft of the heavy operational burdens during the final weeks of her pregnancy and her postpartum recovery.”
There it was. The polite, corporate removal.

On the screen, I watched several men in dark suits nod in quiet agreement.
Marcus sat in a chair just off-camera beside me, completely silent, waiting to see what I would do.
