Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Clara

My only daughter, Clara, died of an aggressive, unforgiving breast cancer when she was just thirty-nine years old.

She left behind a frightened, wide-eyed eight-year-old girl with dark braids, a pink schoolbag, and a worn stuffed bunny she absolutely could not sleep without.

That little girl was Natalie.

From the day Clara drew her last, shallow breath, I stopped being just a grandmother. I became Natalie's mother, her father, her home, her shield against a cruel world, and her entire future.

I paid for everything. I funded her exclusive private school. Her elite piano lessons. Her extravagant summer camps in Switzerland. Her exorbitant college tuition at an Ivy League university. Her pretentious graduate program in London. I paid for her lavish, six-figure Napa Valley wedding. I even provided the massive down payment on her sprawling Pacific Palisades home.

When she demanded to start her own literary agency, claiming she needed independence, I gave her the seed money without a second thought.

When she failed at that and cried that she wanted to “modernize” my legacy publishing company, I immediately made her Vice President, creating a position just for her.

When she complained bitterly that no one took her seriously because she was “just the owner's granddaughter,” I gave her a permanent, voting chair at the boardroom table I had spent decades bleeding to build.

And on my seventy-first birthday, surrounded by people I had funded, she tried to violently take the head of that table by force.
