Chapter 15 - The Empty House

The thirty-day eviction notice on the Pacific Palisades mansion expired on a rainy Tuesday morning.

I didn't go to oversee the eviction personally. I had no desire to witness the pathetic, messy reality of Natalie and Graham being forced onto the street by sheriff's deputies. I simply received a cold, professional phone call from David, my wealth manager, confirming that the property had been officially vacated and the locks had been changed by the bank.

"They left the place in a complete state," David reported over the phone, sounding slightly disgusted. "Trash everywhere, holes in the drywall, abandoned furniture. They basically took their clothes and ran."

"Have a cleaning crew gut it, repair the damage, and put it immediately on the market," I instructed him calmly. "I want that house sold by the end of the month. Add the proceeds directly to the Clara Alden Foundation trust."

"Understood, Beatrice. And what about Natalie?"

"What about her?" I asked.

"I received a notification that she attempted to access your personal checking account at a local branch using an old, forged authorization form," David sighed. "The bank flagged it immediately and denied the transaction. Do you want to press criminal fraud charges?"

I paused, looking out the window of my office. Pressing criminal charges would definitively send my only granddaughter to prison. It would be the final, absolute destruction of her life.

But I thought about the relentless, exhausting cycle of enabling I had participated in for years. I had shielded her from every consequence, every failure, every painful lesson the real world tried to teach her. And my protection had created a monster.

"Yes," I said quietly, the word heavy on my tongue. "File the fraud charges, David. Let the law handle her."

I hung up the phone and closed my eyes. The fierce, protective mother inside me wept, but the woman who had built an empire knew it was the only correct decision.

A week later, I received a brief email from a distant relative, informing me that Graham had officially filed for divorce. Faced with poverty and looming criminal charges, he had predictably abandoned Natalie to save himself, fleeing back to his parents' basement in shame.

Natalie was entirely alone. The magnificent, glittering castle she believed she was destined to rule had completely crumbled to dust, leaving her stranded in the ruins.
