Chapter 19 - One Year Later

The wooden wedge was back under the front door of Willow Creek Elementary.
Cold October air swept low along the floor, but nobody was shivering tonight. The gymnasium was packed to the doors for the annual Harvest Dance, the room smelling of warm sugar cookies, cedar polish, and fresh autumn cider.
A brand-new brass plaque was mounted on the wall beside the stage curtain: THE SARAH CALDWELL MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM.
Near the punch bowl, a large wooden table stood covered in hand-carved wooden toys—rocking horses, music boxes, and miniature waltzing figurines—all being sold to raise funds for the school's new art program.
Standing behind the table, managing the sales with an easy, confident smile, was Laura. She wore a stunning emerald green wool dress, her dark hair styled beautifully, a gold band sparkling on her left ring finger.
"Mom!"
Nine-year-old Rosie ran up to the table, wearing a beautiful new red dress that reached just below her knees. She looked healthy, bright, and completely radiant.
"The band is starting!" Rosie cheered. "Where's Dad?"
"Right behind you, kiddo," a deep, rough voice spoke from the crowd.
Henry Caldwell stepped forward, wearing his dark charcoal suit. His face was weathered, his thumb still bore the thick white scar, but his eyes were filled with an unshakeable, profound happiness.
He reached out, taking Laura's hand in his, pulling her close for a brief, tender kiss before looking down at Rosie.

"Ready for our song, Miss Rosie?" Henry asked.
"Ready, Dad!" Rosie beamed, taking his hand.
