Chapter 16 - The Town Hall Gala

|

The annual Willow Creek Founders' Dinner was held in the newly renovated community hall—the very roof Henry Caldwell had funded three months prior.

The room was decorated with gold ribbons, corn stalks, and white tablecloths. Over a hundred of the town's prominent citizens attended, wearing their finest suits and evening dresses.

At seven-thirty, the heavy double front doors opened.

A sudden, breathless hush fell over the room.

Henry Caldwell walked into the hall. He wore a dark, tailored charcoal suit—a suit he hadn't worn in twenty years—that fit his broad, powerful frame perfectly. His graying hair was neatly combed back, his dark boots polished to a high shine.

On his arm was Laura Parker.

She wore a breathtaking, deep navy blue silk dress that she had altered herself, her dark hair pinned up in an elegant style, showcasing the soft line of her neck. She looked radiant, confident, and entirely unbothered by the staring eyes around her.

And walking between them, her small hand held securely in Henry's large palm, was eight-year-old Rosie, wearing her navy blue dress with the embroidered silver stars.

Richard Vance, standing near the main podium with Mrs. Higgins, went completely pale.

"What is he doing here?" Mrs. Higgins gasped, her hand flying to her pearl necklace. "He hasn't attended a Founders' Dinner since 2003!"

Henry guided Laura and Rosie toward a table near the center of the room. He pulled out Laura's chair with effortless, quiet gallantry before lifting Rosie into her seat.

As Henry sat down, the mayor of Willow Creek—an old friend of Henry's late father—approached the table holding a microphone.

"Henry," Mayor Thomas beamed, offering his hand. "It's an honor to have you here tonight, son. We were hoping you'd say a few words about the new youth center project."

May you like

Henry looked at the mayor, then looked across the room at Richard Vance, who was clutching a thick legal binder with a nervous, sweating brow.

"I'd be glad to say a few words, Mayor," Henry said, standing up smoothly.
