Chapter 19 - The Recovery

|

The healing process was slow, but it was absolute.

Aliyah refused to go to a hospital, preferring the security of the medical room she had originally designed for Victor. This time, the roles were reversed. Victor sat by her bedside for three days, refusing to sleep, personally cleaning her bruises and ensuring she ate.

"You are hovering," Aliyah smiled faintly, sitting up against the pillows as Victor handed her a cup of hot tea.

"I am guarding my investment," Victor replied, a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.

He sat on the edge of the bed, no longer afraid of the proximity. He reached out, his bare hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"I meant what I said in the warehouse, Aliyah," Victor said, his pale gray eyes entirely serious, stripped of all their icy walls. "I tried to live in the dark for twelve years. You brought the light back. I am not a good man. But I will spend the rest of my life trying to be a man worthy of you."

Aliyah set the teacup down on the nightstand. She reached out, taking his scarred hand in hers, intertwining their fingers.

"I don't need a good man, Victor," she whispered, leaning forward to press a soft kiss against his lips. "I just need you."

Over the next few months, life settled into a beautiful, dangerous new normal. Victor completely dismantled the remaining factions of the Romanov syndicate, solidifying his absolute control over New England. Aliyah finished her nursing degree, graduating top of her class, with Victor sitting proudly in the front row surrounded by highly discreet security.

She moved into his master suite permanently. The cold, sterile mansion was slowly filled with life, warmth, and the unmistakable sound of her laughter. Victor’s haphephobia was entirely cured, healed by the unconditional love and patience of the woman who had caught him when he fell.
