Chapter 5: The Truth No One Could Hide

The restaurant remained silent until the first police officers walked through the front doors.

David had already stepped several feet away from Maya, pretending nothing serious had happened.

"It was just an argument," he said with an easy smile. "Family misunderstanding."

Officer Melissa Grant looked around the dining room.

"Did anyone witness the assault?"

For two long seconds...

Nobody spoke.

Then an elderly couple stood.

"We saw everything."

Another voice followed.

"So did we."

One by one, nearly every table in the restaurant nodded.

A waiter stepped forward.

"Our security cameras captured the entire incident."

The restaurant manager immediately offered the surveillance footage.

David's confident smile disappeared.

Rebecca suddenly stood.

"My son would never hurt his wife. She's emotional. She exaggerates."

Officer Grant turned toward Maya.

"Ma'am, would you like to tell us what happened?"

Maya lowered her eyes.

Her fingers trembled.

Elena gently squeezed her daughter's hand.

"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."

For a long moment...

Maya said nothing.

Then years of fear finally broke apart.

"He does this all the time."

The room became even quieter.

Rebecca's face hardened.

"Don't embarrass your husband."

Maya ignored her.

"He pulls my hair."

"He grabs my arms."

"He controls every dollar I earn."

"He checks my phone."

"He tells me no one would ever believe me."

David stepped forward.

"She's lying."

Officer Grant raised a hand.

"Stay where you are."

Maya slowly rolled up the sleeve of her blouse.

Dark yellow bruises covered her upper arm.

Several guests gasped.

Then she pulled back her hair.

Near the base of her neck were small bald patches where hair had been repeatedly torn out.

Elena closed her eyes.

She had suspected.

She had never imagined it was this bad.

Officer Grant looked directly at David.

"Sir, place your hands behind your back."

"You can't arrest me over one family argument."

"No," she replied calmly.

"We're arresting you for assault."

As the handcuffs clicked shut...

Rebecca shouted,

"This is her fault! She never respected her husband!"

Officer Grant looked at her coldly.

"Ma'am, encouraging domestic violence isn't a defense."

As David was escorted through the restaurant...

Every person watching saw the same thing.

May you like

Not a powerful husband.

Just a frightened bully whose control had finally ended.
