Chapter 27

The day of Arthur Vance’s grand jury hearing arrived with a heavy, oppressive grey sky. The courthouse was swarming with reporters, cameras flashing relentlessly as we walked up the massive stone steps. I kept Lily safely at home, but Sarah and Lucy walked beside me, presenting a unified, impenetrable front of strength.
Inside the sterile courtroom, the air felt thick with tension. Arthur Vance sat at the defense table, wearing an immaculate custom suit, projecting an aura of arrogant, untouchable confidence. He believed his money and his legal prowess would ultimately shield him from the consequences of his atrocities.
When I was called to the witness stand, I swore the oath and took my seat. The prosecutor, a sharp, no-nonsense woman named Davis, approached the podium.
"Dr. Carter, can you describe the physical and psychological state of the children when you recovered them from the defendant's private vault?" Davis asked clearly.
I looked directly at the jury, bypassing Vance completely. I detailed the profound malnourishment, the distinct bruising on their wrists, and the absolute, paralyzing terror that had gripped them. I explained the medical definition of complex PTSD and how the environment in the vault was specifically designed to inflict maximum psychological torture.
Vance’s defense attorney immediately launched into a brutal cross-examination, attempting to discredit my medical assessment as biased due to my personal history with Clara.
"Isn't it true, Dr. Carter, that your own personal trauma has clouded your objective medical judgment?" the defense attorney sneered.

"My personal history has not clouded my judgment; it has sharpened it," I replied, my voice steady and unwavering. "I know exactly what prolonged captivity looks like on a child's body and mind. The evidence of abuse on those children is irrefutable, scientific fact. No amount of legal posturing can erase the bruises I documented with my own hands."
The courtroom fell completely silent. The jury stared at me, deeply moved by the undeniable truth of the statement. Vance’s arrogant smirk finally faltered.
