Chapter 24

"Police! You're safe now!" Miller shouted, lowering his weapon and signaling the tactical team to secure the perimeter.
The children flinched violently at the loud voices, burying their faces in their knees. I immediately dropped my medical bag and held up my hands, gesturing for the officers to step back and lower their flashlights.
"Give them space," I commanded softly. "You're scaring them."
I took a slow, deliberate breath, forcing my own racing heart to calm down. I crawled forward on my hands and knees, keeping my body low to the ground to appear as non-threatening as possible.
"Hi," I whispered gently. "My name is Ethan. I'm a doctor. I am not going to hurt you. No one in this room is going to hurt you ever again."
The oldest child, a girl who looked to be around ten years old, slowly lifted her head. Her face was streaked with dirt and tears, and her eyes were wide with a profound, soul-crushing fear. She held her two younger siblings tightly against her side.
"Are you... are you going to lock the door?" she asked, her voice raspy and broken.
"No," I promised, my own eyes filling with tears as the echoes of Lily's trauma mirrored back at me. "The door stays open forever. You are going home."
I carefully opened my medical bag, pulling out three small, sterile blankets and a few bottles of water. I handed them over slowly, letting the girl take them on her own terms.
"We have an ambulance waiting upstairs," Miller said softly from the doorway.

I nodded, looking at the brave little girl. "Whenever you are ready, we can walk upstairs together. There is a lot of bright sunlight waiting for you."
It took twenty agonizing minutes of quiet encouragement, but finally, the children allowed me to guide them out of the dark, suffocating vault and into the safety of the bright, waiting world.
