Chapter 5 - Whispering Gallery

I stepped into the grand ballroom alone. The string orchestra was playing a smooth waltz, but the moment I walked into the light, the music seemed to falter.
Groups of high-society patrons—women wrapped in diamonds and men in tailor-made tuxedos—whispered behind their gloved hands.
"Is that the dress?"
"My God, Eleanor said the girl had a nervous breakdown before the ceremony."
"Does she smell like... garbage?"
I caught sight of my father standing near the grand staircase. Arthur Vance looked sharp in his dark suit—a suit Eleanor had sneered at during the rehearsal dinner. He raised his glass to me. His eyes were clear and steady. He knew what was coming.
Daniel walked up beside me, offering me a glass of champagne with a shaking hand. He had downed three shots of scotch in the library before entering the room; I could smell the alcohol on his breath.
"Maya, we need to talk in private," Daniel muttered under his breath, his eyes darting toward the crowd. "My father is getting furious. The Mayor just asked him why my bride looks like she crawled out of a dumpster."
"Tell the Mayor it's a new fashion statement from the Whitmore collection," I replied, taking a sip of the champagne. "Where is Eleanor?"
"She's in the side lounge with our lawyer, Harrison," Daniel whispered desperately. "Maya, whatever you think you have... whatever numbers you found in my desk... we can settle it. My dad can write your father a check for five million dollars tonight. Just put on another dress and stop this!"
I turned my head slowly to look at him.
"Five million dollars?" I asked softly. "You think five million dollars pays for the five years my father spent in despair thinking he failed his family? You think five million dollars washes garbage off silk?"

"What do you want, then?" Daniel demanded, his voice rising in frustration.
"I want the whole house to burn down, Daniel," I said. "And you're holding the match."
