Chapter 19 - Leaving the Ashes

Six months after the wedding, the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts for Richard and Eleanor Whitmore. Richard received fifteen years in federal prison; Eleanor received eight. Daniel, who had agreed to a plea deal to testify against his father’s accountants, was sentenced to three years in a minimum-security facility.
The Whitmore estate was liquidated at a public auction to pay back millions in restitution to defrauded investors and stolen business assets.
My father received three point five million dollars in restored capital. With that money, he officially reopened Vance Logistics, hiring back forty of his original employees who had lost their jobs during the Whitmore takeover.
On a warm afternoon in late October, my father and I stood on the newly paved loading dock of our restored warehouse, watching three massive silver trucks pull out onto the highway, emblazoned with our family name.
"Looks pretty good, doesn't it?" my dad asked, leaning against the metal railing.
"It looks perfect, Dad," I replied, taking a deep breath of the autumn air.

My phone rang in my pocket. It was a call from my lawyer confirming that my divorce from Daniel Whitmore was officially finalized. I was no longer a Whitmore. I was Maya Vance again.
I hung up the phone, stepped off the loading dock, and walked toward my car. My life was finally my own again. The stain was gone, the house of cards had fallen, and the future was wide open.
