Chapter 5: The Pathetic Pawn

Chapter 5: The Pathetic Pawn
Marcus, realizing his standard tactics of loud intimidation were completely bouncing off Elena’s armor, shifted his strategy. If fear didn't work, he would try psychological manipulation.
He offered a sharp, cruel, and incredibly confident smile.
"I brought on a new executive consultant today, Elena," Marcus said smoothly, leaning back into the expensive leather sofa. "Someone who knows your history. Someone who knows exactly where your weaknesses lie."
The heavy, custom-carved oak doors of the VIP lounge slowly creaked open.
Daniel walked in.
He looked entirely out of place. He was worn down, his shoulders slumped, dressed in a suit that was visibly a season too old and slightly ill-fitting compared to the billionaires in the room. His aura of arrogant entitlement had been entirely stripped away by a year of failure.
Daniel couldn't even meet Elena's eyes. He stared firmly at the intricate pattern of the Persian rug, his jaw tight with profound shame.
Elena slowly turned her head to look at the man she used to love, the man who had betrayed her for a luxury lifestyle he couldn't maintain.
She didn't shout his name. She didn't leap from her chair. She didn't throw her glass of sparkling water in his face. In real life, profound disappointment is entirely silent.
"Marcus," Elena said, her voice perfectly level, maintaining the devastating quietness of the room. "If you have to buy my discarded history just to understand my future..."

She paused, letting the absolute weight of her indifference settle over both men.
"...you have already lost the war."
